Pratima Bhowmik Steps down as MLA in Tripura, Focuses on Union Minster Role
The Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Pratima Bhowmik, has announced her resignation from her assembly seat in the Dhanpur constituency of the Sonamura subdivision in Tripura. Bhowmik was elected as the MLA from Dhanpur in the recent assembly elections but has now resigned from the seat in order to focus on her duties as Union Minister.
In a recent statement, Bhowmik mentioned that as per the decision of the party, she will continue to serve as the Union Minister and resign from her position as MLA from Dhanpur. She expressed her gratitude towards the people of Dhanpur and Tripura for their support and affection towards her.
During her emotional resignation from the assembly, Bhowmik recalled her previous attempts to win the Dhanpur seat in the 1998 and 2018 assembly elections, where she had fought against former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar. She assured the people of Dhanpur that she will continue to serve them to the best of her ability.
It is important to note that under the Indian Constitution, a person cannot be a member of both Houses of Parliament (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha) simultaneously, and similarly, cannot be a member of both the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council of a state at the same time. Therefore, Bhowmik's resignation from the Dhanpur assembly seat is in line with constitutional provisions.
The Indian Constitution allows for a vacant seat in a state Legislative Assembly to be filled through a by-election, and the vacancy must be filled within six months of its occurrence. The responsibility of conducting the by-election to fill the vacant seat lies with the Election Commission of India.
Bhowmik's decision to resign from her assembly seat to focus on her role as Union Minister reflects her commitment to serving the people of India. Her resignation will pave the way for a by-election in Dhanpur, which will give the people of the constituency an opportunity to choose their representative who will serve them in the state assembly.
